When it comes to pack animals, mules are the perfect choice. And when it comes to pack pads, 5 Star’s Mountain Packer in mule contour is the right pad for the job. Flatter along the spine and withers and wider at the shoulders than a horse contour, your mule will be wondering where this pad has been all his life. The Mountain Packer pad measures 33.5” long (taken 6” below the spine) by 43” wide (taken directly behind the gullet hole).

Special design features include wear leathers that run the full length of the pad to accommodate a pack outfit, and a leather flap to cover the gullet hole, which helps prevent debris from collecting and causing discomfort for your animal.

    Your mule knows he is not shaped like a horse, and so does 5 Star, which is why they created the mule contour. Flatter (less curve) along the spine and withers and wider at the shoulders than a horse contour, your mule will be wondering where this pad has been all his life!

    The 1” thickness is designed with ranch work in mind, for roping, performance, colt starting or heading to the mountains with lots of gear. It is the best choice for heavier gear/rider weights, or longer/harder riding sessions.

    The Mountain Packer is extra-wide(43”) and –long (33 ½”), making it ideal for use with a packer outfit. The side wear leathers go the full length of the pad to prevent wear-and-tear on the edge of the felt. Also, the gullet hole has a leather flap over it to prevent twigs and debris from falling in and causing discomfort for your animal.

"Which Pad Do I Need?"

Use these questions to help you decide which pad is best for you.

  1. How long? The general rule of thumb is that you want your saddle pad to stick out 1"-2" in both the front AND the back of your saddle skirts. For example, if your saddle skirts are 26" long from nose-to-tail, you would be okay with choosing a Barrel (28" long) or a Regular (30" long) skirt pad. However, if your saddle skirts are 27" long, you would have to go with a Regular Skirt pad.
  2. What shape? Choose a skirt shape that complements your saddle skirts.
  3. How long will you be riding? If you ride more than four hours at one time on a regular basis, you need a pad that is at least 7/8" thick.
  4. How much do you weigh? If you and your gear together weigh more than 200 lbs., you should get at least a 7/8" pad, but a 1" would be better.
  5. What kind of terrain will you be riding on? If you regularly ride over mountainous or hilly areas, again, you want at least a 7/8" thick pad, but 1" would be better.
